April 2010: Mary Ann Nagy, Watercolors

For as long as I can remember, art and animals have been a passion of mine. I grew up in Michigan as part of a warm creative family of five humans and an assortment of animal friends, and went on to study art at MSU followed by getting a degree in art at The University of San Diego.
After living many years in the Midwest, I moved to Seattle with my husband and two daughters, and have been focusing on combining my love of painting animals with my longstanding interest in animal advocacy. I have been able to participate in many solo and group exhibitions in the Puget Sound area and beyond, and to draw other animal-inspired artists together around shows that benefit animals.
My work always begins with a well-defined concept—I envision what I want to do before it gets translated onto paper or canvas. I labor intently, experimenting and crafting with a strong focus on color and design until I'm satisfied that the piece "works." In these paintings a bright sense of whimsy is often married to an aura of mystery that leaves you wondering about the rest of the story. They also convey a sense of joy that is testified to by the many comments I receive at shows from people of all ages and backgrounds...."These paintings make me smile!"
